I have never been able to think of the day as one of mourning; I have never quite been able to feel that half-masted flags were appropriate on Decoration Day. I have rather felt that the flag should be at the peak, because those whose dying we commemorate rejoiced in seeing it where their valor placed it. We honor them in a joyous, thankful, triumphant commemoration of what they did.

Memorial Day


A Brief History

Memorial Day is more than going to a parade and having a BBQ or picnic! It is a day of remembrance of those who have died serving our country.
~Since the late 1950′s on the Thursday just before Memorial Day, around 1200 soldiers of the 3rd U.S. Infantry place small American flags at each of the more than 260,000 gravestones at Arlington National Cemetery. Mozzarella and Tomato Salad with Marinated Raisins


Marinated raisins add a surprisingly sweet twist to this Italian salad.

Ingredients:
4 tablespoons olive oil
3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 pound fresh mozzarella cut into 1/4 inch slices
3 medium tomato cut into 1/4 inch slices
1/2 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped (about 6-7 leaves)

S'mores Trifle


Great for a rainy day!

Love s'mores, but don't have a campfire handy? Here is a new way to enjoy a treat loved by all! This dessert is great for all occasions - birthday, BBQ, potluck or just because!

Ingredients:

1 box chocolate cake mix, prepared as directed on box
4 cups chocolate pudding
9 graham crackers (full size rectangles)
3 cups mini marshmallows
12 oz whipped topping

If you are at least 12 years old and interested in helping out with the Summer Reading Program this year, please plan to attend an informational meeting on Tuesday, June 4, at 5pm. We will provide an overview of our expectations and offer opportunities to earn community service hours to qualified applicants. Pizza and snacks will be provided for attendees.

Pay tribute to the veterans and heroes of the Vietnam War by visiting this half-size replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, DC.

First exhibited in Tyler, Texas in 1984, the “Wall” has traveled the country continuously since then. Join with other veterans and town officials at the opening ceremony, to be held at 5:30 PM on May 30, and for the closing ceremony on the morning of June 3. Or visit anytime during its stay. The exhibit is open 24 hours each day at the John Mill Memorial Field at Medway High School.

The Pawtucket Red Sox designated two home games during the 2013 season as “Peanut Free Nights” at McCoy Stadium. The next "Peanut Free" game will be on August 13 vs. Louisville at 7:05 pm. Peanut products will not be sold anywhere throughout the ballpark during this game.
